Gerard Basset lahkus meie hulgast eile, 16. jaanuaril 2019. Basset oli Maailma Parim Sommeljee 2010 ja ASI tehniline direktor. Lisaks oli ta ainuke inimene, kes omas samaaegselt väga väljakutsuvat kvalifikatsiooni Master of Wine ja ka Master Sommelier, MBA Wine Business ja MSc.
Suurmeest võib iseloomustada kui andekat, teadmisterikast, teravmeelset ja samaaegselt alandlikku, lahket ja lõbusat inimest, kes lisaks oma mitmetele tiitlitele oli ASI pere liige ja eeskuju meile kõigile.
Alates 2017. aastast söögitoruvähiga võidelnud meistersommeljee lahkus olles ümbritsetud oma perekonnast.
Eesti Sommeljeede Assotsiatsiooni president Kristjan Markii avaldab ESA juhatuse nimel lähedastele kaastunnet ja lisab, et Gerard Basset oli eeskujuks sommeljeena ja inimesena oma täpsuse, lahkuse ja abivalmidusega.

As you probably know already, our dear friend Gérard Basset, ASI’s Best Sommelier of the World 2010 & Technical Director, passed away yesterday.
Witty, talented, humble, generous, knowledgeable, kind, fun… these are but a few of the many great words that best describe him. He had countless titles, but above all Gérard was a member of our global family and an inspiration for all of us.
ASI was a home for him, so today we mourn the man and seek comfort in the many warm memories that we share, the myriad anecdotes that define the unique human being, friend, professional and visionary that he was. He didn’t create sommellerie, but he reinvented it for generations to come.
Our thoughts are with his wife Nina, his son Romané and all his family and friends. We’ll communicate details about his funeral as soon as we have them, and an ASI delegation will attend. May he rest in peace, he will be deeply missed!
