At last night’s IWSC Annual Awards Banquet in London, the International Wine and Spirit Competition – arguably the world’s most prestigious wine awards – named Spier the 2018 South African Producer of the Year.
The award recognises the two trophies the historic Stellenbosch farm won earlier this year: the 2018 IWSC Sauvignon Blanc Trophy, awarded to the Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and the 2018 Chenin Blanc Trophy, awarded to the Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2016.
“The success of the range’s two white wines on the global stage is proof of our passionate dedication to crafting single varietal wines of the highest quality – and fully expressive of the Cape’s unique terroir,” says Spier’s Cellar Master, Frans Smit.
The Chenin Blanc Trophy has only ever been won by South African wineries, reinforcing South Africa’s reputation for producing excellent Chenin Blanc wines.
Spier’s win brings the Sauvignon Blanc trophy to South Africa for the second time, after New Zealand dominated the category for the past three years.
The IWSC Annual Awards Banquet in London brought together the elite of the wine and spirits industry to celebrate the achievements of the year, and enjoy a lavish 5-course meal during which the Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2016 was served.
The International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) is an annual wine and spirit competition founded in 1969, judging entries from more than 90 countries.
